This March 22nd, from LIFE ECODIGESTION 2.0 we want to commemorate World Water Day. The current context of wastewater treatment requires a great acceleration for change. According to the United Nations statement in 2015, the entire world committed to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 6, as part of the 2030 Agenda. With the promise that all the world’s population will have access to water and sanitation, safely managed, by 2030. 

At LIFE ECODIGESTION 2.0 we aim to boost water treatment as a sustainable and planet-friendly procedure. The technology implemented in our WTPP allows the prevention and reuse of waste, using renewable energy sources, such as biogas, for the operation of machinery. Water treatment plants require a transition in terms of the technology they implement, making it more sustainable. The anaerobic system implemented in our WWP is a further step towards sustainability in wastewater depuration. Due to its low energy consumption, low chemical use and reduction of operating costs, the use of anaerobic wastewater treatment plants is a further step towards sustainability in wastewater treatment. It is noteworthy that the volumetric loads used in anaerobic systems can reach up to 25 kg COD/m3-d, which allows the treatment of biodegradable wastewater with a high COD content and reduces the space requirements for its implementation. Finally, anaerobic processes also have the advantage of being able to market the granular biomass produced, as seed in the reactors for the start-up of other plants, thus significantly reducing the cost associated with sludge treatment. 

In short, water finds itself at the core of sustainable development and it is fundamental for socio-economic development, healthy ecosystems and the wellbeing of the population. Water treatment is crucially important, considering the influence it plays in the aforementioned. From LFE ECODIGESTION 2.0 we will continue to contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the European Green Pact and the guidelines set by the SDGs, giving rise to a sustainable and environmentally sustainable water treatment.
